What is the Guided Self Placement?

The SBCC ESL Guided Self-Placement helps new students in credit English as a Second Language (ESL) to find classes that match their language levels. 

  • The ESL Guided Self-Placement is available to all students whose primary language is not English and to students who enroll in credit ESL classes for the first time.
  • Students with a placement or who already started ESL classes move through the ESL course sequence as they complete each semester. If you have already done the Guided Self Placement and feel your level is not correct, please speak with your instructors or the ESL Assessment Coordinator.

In the SBCC Guided Self Placement you will watch videos describing each level of SBCC credit ESL and look at short readings at different levels. Based on this, you decide if they are too hard, too easy, or good for you.

驴Qu茅 es la autoubicaci贸n guiada?

El proceso de autoubicaci贸n guiada de ESL de SBCC ayuda a los nuevos estudiantes de cursos de ingl茅s como segundo idioma (ESL) con creditos a encontrar clases adecuadas a su nivel del idioma.

  • Esta autoubicaci贸n guiada est谩 disponible para todos los estudiantes cuya lengua materna no es el ingl茅s y para aquellos que se inscriben por primera vez en clases de ESL con creditos.
  • Una vez escogido el nivel, los estudiantes deben completar clases para avanzar de nivel cada semestre. Si ya ha realizado la autoubicaci贸n guiada y considera que su nivel no es el adecuado, por favor hable con sus instructores o con el coordinador de evaluaci贸n de ESL.

Durante el proceso de autoubicaci贸n guiada de ESL, ver谩 videos que describen cada nivel de los cursos y revisar谩 lecturas breves de distintos niveles. Con base en esto, usted determinar谩 si el material le resulta demasiado dif铆cil, demasiado f谩cil o adecuado para usted.

Why is it important to choose the correct class?  

The ESL program has five levels of classes from beginning to advanced. When you choose the correct level:

  • You will understand the material and assignments.
  • You will learn more English at a good pace for you.
  • You will feel more comfortable in class if you are in the correct level.

If you choose the wrong level:

  • The class may move too fast or too slow for you.
  • You might not understand the material and assignments.
  • You might fail the class because it is too difficult.

驴Por qu茅 es importante elegir la clase adecuada?

El programa de ESL cuenta con cinco niveles de clases, desde el nivel inicial hasta el avanzado. Al elegir el nivel adecuado:

  • Entender谩s el material y las tareas.
  • Aprender谩s m谩s ingl茅s a un ritmo adecuado para ti.
  • Te sentir谩s m谩s c贸modo en clase si est谩s en el nivel correcto.

Si eliges un nivel inadecuado:

  • La clase podr铆a avanzar demasiado r谩pido o demasiado lento para ti.
  • Es posible que no entiendas bien el material ni las tareas.
  • Podr铆as reprobar la clase por ser demasiado dif铆cil.
