Biology Laboratory Manual. Hawaii: NatureJournal. ISBN: 978-1-942380-18-4. Nature of the Course Biology Laboratory is a general biology laboratory course investigating biological principles and techniques of investigation. Biology Laboratory satisfies the SBCC General Education requirement in Natural Sciences when combined with Biology 110 (Natural Science) or Biology 112 (Evolution and Adaptation) or Biology 140 (Principles of Biology). Biology Laboratory transfers to all UC and California State University campuses where it also will satisfy a general education requirement for a life science laboratory course when coupled with one of the three courses noted above. Biology Laboratory may be taken concurrently with or during a following term after completion of Biology 110, 112 or 140. Biology Laboratory Student Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate proficiency in the basic methods, instrumentation, and quantitative analytical skills used to conduct biological research. 2. Produce original research reports and review papers in a standard scientific format based on laboratory, field experiments, and literature searches that include critical quantitative and qualitative evaluation of data to effectively communicate results, interpretations, and concepts. Required Assignment Due Dates See course calendar in column at left and Assignments page. All lab reports are due on Thursdays. Note: due dates are included only as recommendations. Except for Lab 1 (which must be started early and is completed at the end of the term), labs may be completed in any order. Review the Biology Laboratory Manual pages to determine which sequence works best for your location and time commitments. Establishing a Turnitin Account Submit your exams and essays through Turnitin: http://www.turnitin.com Turnitin is a website subscribed to by all California Community Colleges that allows students to submit papers using a wide variety of word-processing programs and that will preserve your formatting. Instead of emailing your exams to me, you will submit them through Turnitin following the directions below. You will need the following information: Turnitin Class ID: 21924770 (write this down) Turnitin Class Enrollment Password: fall2019 (write this down) 1. Open the Turnitin web site at http://www.turnitin.com 2. Select "Create Account" in the upper right-hand corner. If you already have an account, simply login. Your login is the email address you used to create an account and the password you created at that time. If you cannot remember your Turnitin login, simply create a new account. 3. Select "Student" on the next page. 4. Enter the Turnitin Class ID 21924770 and the Turnitin Class Enrollment Password fall2019 on the next page. 5. Then, follow instructions for creating your personal profile. Nature of the Graded Assignments Laboratory Reports There are twelve laboratory exercises and 13 laboratory reports are required (Lab 01 requires a first and final report). Each lab report is worth 10 points. Each laboratory exercise involves completion of an exercise and the submission of a laboratory report based on the results. The formats of the lab reports vary from lab to lab, and may take the form of short written descriptions, diagrams, photographs, answers to questions, etc. Specific directions are given for each lab report on the corresponding page of the lab manual. Lab reports are submitted to Turnitin. Late lab reports are accepted with minimal point deductions; however, at least five lab reports must be submitted before the last date to withdraw from the course with a "W" (25 October). The last day to submit any lab is the last Thursday, 5 December. Lab report due dates: Thursday 10 Oct. At least three lab reports must be submitted. Thursday 24 Oct. At least five lab reports must be submitted. Thursday 14 Nov. At least seven lab reports must be submitted. Thursday 28 Nov. At least ten lab reports must be submitted. Thursday 5 Dec. Last day to submit any lab report. Any late lab reports will be accepted until this date, but penalties will apply if the above due dates were not met. Important Note: Each lab report is worth 10 points. Submitting all thirteen lab reports carries the possibility of earning 130 points (30 points extra credit). A minimum number of eight lab reports must be submitted for a total of 80 points possible. If fewer than eight lab reports are submitted by 5 Dec, a penalty of 10 points will apply to each missing lab report below eight. For example, if a student submits only six lab reports, he or she could earn a maximum of 60 points, but would also be penalized 20 points (10 points each for falling two reports short of the minimum number of eight), for a grand total of 40 points for lab reports, out of a total 130 points possible. Submitting Laboratory Reports is Required Late lab reports are accepted with minimal point deductions; however, at least five lab reports must be submitted before the last date to withdraw from the course with a "W". At least ten lab reports must be submitted by Monday of the week prior to the last week of instruction (see Calendar). The last day to submit any lab report is the last day of instruction. It is understood that completion of labs might be delayed for a variety of reasons and, to keep you on track for successfully completing the course, I have listed recommended deadlines. You may submit labs late with the following stipulations. You must submit five (5) labs before the last date to withdraw from the course with a "W". If you have submitted no labs, you will be dropped and will receive a "W" instead of an F grade. If you have submitted some labs, I will not drop you; however, you will earn a 2-point late deduction for each lab below five assessed to your total points at the end of the course. As the last day to withdraw approaches, if you do NOT expect to complete the course but have submitted some labs, it is your responsibility to withdraw to protect your GPA, I will not drop you. If I drop you, you can be reinstated by submitting labs at a later date, but with late point deductions. If you drop, you cannot be re-instated. (If you are not sure about your progress, request that I drop you so that you can be reinstated if you change your mind and submit missing labs). Student Evaluation Course grades are determined by your total point score according to the following scale:* Laboratory Reports: 130 points, 10 points each Assignment Grade Scale (points): A 100 - 85; B 84 - 75; C 74 - 65; D 64 - 55; F 54 - 00 Pass / NoPass: Pass = low middle C, 70 percent, or above; NoPass = 69 percent and below. * Important Notes about Grades and Participation Submission of assignments is a measure of course participation/attendance. Failing to submit assignments, particularly early in the course, will result in dismissal similar to a traditional, onsite class requiring attendance.
